I have been diagnosed with skin cancer – does that mean I have to have surgery? Will treatment set me back thousands of dollars? How regularly do I have to have full body skin checks now? When it comes to skin cancer, there are no silly questions. Our doctors and nurses are here to take care of you during your diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. Here is some quick information regarding what happens following your diagnosis.

I have had a biopsy, what now?

Our receptionists can’t give results over the phone, so you will need to speak to the doctor regarding your results. While no news is generally good news, if you haven’t heard anything after two weeks, it may be best to call our number. Ask the receptionist to notify the doctor for them to call you at their earliest convenience.

Following the diagnosis, your doctor will discuss with you the options of treatment.

“In some cases your biopsy may remove all of your skin cancer and you may not require further treatment.”

Says https://www.sunsmart.com.au.

In other cases, treatment options can vary depending on different factors. For example: the size of the cancer, where it is on your body, and your age.

At Qutis, we offer the following treatments:

  • Surgical procedures to remove the skin cancer
  • Photodynamic therapy, (a light treatment therapy)
  • Cryotherapy (or freezing) of the spot
  • Creams for a targeted area

With certain procedures, there is aftercare provided in the form of a wound review, and a removal of sutures with our nurses and doctors. If you experience any complications with your wound, our team will do our best to get you in the same day to see the nurses as soon as possible.

What is the billing for procedures?

Your doctor is the best person to discuss all treatment costs with, as the billing depends on the type of procedure being done and the area the cancer is being removed from.

Generally procedures range in fees and can be anywhere from around $50 to $600. However, the billing is at the doctors discretion. That means the amount may increase, especially if there are multiple procedures being done.

In almost all cases though, you will receive a medicare rebate for your procedure, with reception sending the claim off for you, so you can sit back and wait for part of the money to come back into your account.

If you ever have any concerns regarding your billing, our reception and admin team are here and happy to consider your every concern.

How often do I need to have skin checks if I’ve had skin cancer before?

Skin check frequency varies from person to person. Some may feel they would prefer to come in every year if they have been diagnosed with skin cancer previously. However, the doctor will give you their advice on how often to come back based on your specific needs.

We also have specific spot check appointments, so if you find a concerning spot in between your regular check ups, speak to our friendly receptionists about a quick check appointment for those one or two concerns.

If you would like to clarify any of this information, please call Qutis at 5201 7030, and we look forward to seeing you for your next appointment!
