Who would have thought that winter would be the best time for a skin check!

Sundoctors.com.au gives us some reasons why a winter skin check may be perfect for you.

Reasons to book in winter

  • Sun on your skin can actually slightly affect the way your moles look. If you rug up in the colder weather you can be protecting yourself from large amounts of sun exposure. Then it may be easier for the doctors to view your moles through the dermatoscope accurately.
  • Much like Rome, skin cancer isn’t necessarily built in a day (so to speak 😊). While melanomas can show up in as little as weeks, sometimes it can take much longer for sun damage to turn into a cancerous mole; in as long as months or years! Because we tend to be more covered in the winter months, it can be hard to pick up unusual moles that crop up in the winter, in the months following summer sun exposure. Getting a skin check allows a professional to check your moles and determine if there is anything to be concerned about that we may miss ourselves.
  • Skin cancer isn’t just something that affects you in summer. It can come at any month in any season. So, a skin check allows for the moles that do develop quickly, especially in winter, to be picked up. You wouldn’t want to wait until summer comes around again for you to remember that you need to book in!

And while it may seem like a downside to de-rug yourself in the freezing cold weather, we promise our clinic will be warm and inviting, even if it’s icy outside!
